Yohshuu Shonin is a restaurant, ramen shop, and part of a
growing chain with over ten branches. Normally, this would
be a recipe for culinary indifference and stupefyingly boring
decor, but Yohshuu Shonin defies the odds to deliver a dining
experience that is fun, cheerful and surprisingly delicious
while giving the standard ramen shop prices.
The menu is at the same time intriguingly tempting and comfortably
familiar. Intriguing because all the ramen dishes presented
have Chinese flavorings and ingredients, but familiar because
they are almost all noodles in huge bowls with soup - well,
it's "ramen", isn't it?
Typical of these is the Suuraatan Ramen, or Hot and Sour Soup
Ramen. It's all there, shreds of pork, bamboo shoots, cloud
ear mushrooms, tofu, and egg in a thickened broth with dashes
of vinegar and white pepper, topped with hot sesame oil. And
beneath all that is a serving of fine-gauge noodles. Containers
of vinegar, hot oil, and white pepper are in front of you
should you wish to spice it up more, or alter the ratio of
the key flavor ingredients.
The standout on the drink menu is Tsingtao Beer. More adventurous
palates may option for the various types of Chinese liquors
by the glass. Also, you may satisfy yourself on the free iced
jasmine tea from the pitchers placed on the tables.
