The New National Theater opened in October, 1997. It consists
of three parts: the Opera Theater, the Medium Theater for performances
of plays and modern dances, and the Small Theater intended for
experimental theatrical art.
The walls and ceiling of the Opera Theater are covered with
thick wood panels. That's why the theater could boast ideal
acoustic. The acoustic environment has been designed to give
the audience a clear, natural and beautiful sound. The fully
digital console provides a warm and rich sound, and the sophisticated
sound equipment is balanced to satisfy the most stringent demands
of staging live vocal performances. Japanese opera lovers say
that the Opera Theater is a musical instrument itself. The repertoire
of the theater includes Macbeth, Carmen, Mozart in Italy and
others. The operas of the New National Theater are performed
by the best Japanese singers. The troupe often goes on tours
and participates in international music festivals.
Ballet repertoire is also very rich. It includes classical ballets,
such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, The Swan
Lake and others. Those who prefer modern dances and plays will
enjoy such theater works as The Other Side, The Game, Steam
of Transparent Man.
The drama performances usually take place in the so-called Pit
Hall. It has very convenient facilities for the stage effects.
The Pit features the movable floor that can be used for both
stage and seating area. Raising or pulling down the floor creates
the preciously right performance space to suit particular staging
plan. The stage can be in the middle or in the end of the seating
area or serve as an arena. These transformations add new and
unexpected details to each performance.
In the New National Theater, there is information center for
those who like theater art and want to know more about it. In
the center, there is a wide range of materials covering the
history of the world and Japanese theater, biographies of famous
actors, actresses, dancers and singers, manuals for students
of theatrical colleges and universities.
If you want to enjoy Japanese theatrical art, you should visit
one of the New National Theatre performances. In the hospitable
