Bodaiju is the name of the type of tree under which Buddha
had his enlightenment. It is also the name of a cavernous
restaurant in Suidobashi filled with antiques, a collection
of blue and white Chinese dishes and old brass teapots, and
tables made from half-tree trunks.
The menu of the Bodaiju Restaurant is as large as a tabletop.
The ceiling is held up with massive beams. In the restroom,
a large stone fish hollowed out of a boulder serves as a wash
basin. The feeling one gets here is big-hearted generosity.
This is a relaxed, friendly space where there is more than
enough of everything for everybody.
The menu features beef, pork, croquettes (vegetable and crab),
oysters and other seafood in season. A mountainous plate of
salad comes with your meal, piled high with lettuce, cabbage,
seaweed, cucumbers and is accompanied by a choice of six house-made
dressings. On each table there are also four large bowls of
different pickles - kimchee, ao kimchee, takuan, and cucumber.
All this goes down very well with a frosty mug of draft beer.
